Field Archery

For field archery enthusiasts, DCWC has a 28-target NFAA (National Field Archery Association) range.  This is where you really learn how to shoot archery.  Field archery has it all-up hills, down hills, flat, angles, lighting changes and different footings.  Many consider Field Archery the toughest of all archery games to master.  Most spend a lifetime trying.  Each target has a sign specifying the target number and the yardage’s you are supposed to shoot for each target.  There are corresponding markers in the ground.  The basic NFAA field round is made up of 28 targets. You shoot four arrows at each target for a total of 112 arrows per field round.  There is also a round called a hunter round.  Which has nothing to do with hunting.  The only difference between a hunter round and a field round is the color of the target face. The field face is basically white with a black bullseye with a little x in the middle and a black outer ring.  The hunter face is predominantly black with a white bullseye.  The outer ring is very fine. The distances vary depending on the round you are shooting ranging from 20 feet to 240 feet (that’s 80 yards away folks)! As you get farther away the size of the target gets larger. The idea is that you concentrate on a spot and it will make a better archer out of you.  And it’s FUN.

The challenge each time you go out to see first how many targets you can hit, then seeing how far away, then how consistent you can become, and it goes on and on.  Then when you get really, really good you can see who can hit the most little x’s.  So come out and give it a try, by the way it’s good exercise to! Field courses are usually laid out in the woods with varying terrain so you get to do some walking .

Younger folks get a bit of a break.  If you’re under 14 years of age, your longest distance is 50 yards away.  If you’re under 12, the longest range is 30 yards.  There are possible 20 points per target for a perfect round of 560.

For the bow hunter, DCWC has a 14 target 3-D course, as well as a tree stand for practicing your hunting skills.  Broadhead arrows must be shot at the broadhead target only.  Field points are shot on the 3-D animal course.

The archery range at DCWC has received a 5 Star rating from the NFAA.  We will host several sanctioned matches throughout the outdoor season.  We are excited to report that DCWC has hosted the NFAA Southeast Sectional and the North Carolina Field Archery Association State Championship. Keep an eye on this site for further information.

All archers that would like to compete for awards at NFAA sanctioned matches must be members of the NFAA. For information on the NFAA go to www.nfaa.org.  Annual NFAA dues are $50.00. Scoring on NFAA courses is identical throughout the US.  No matter where you live, you can compare your score and your level of proficiency with an archer shooting in your division and style anywhere else in the country.  You always shoot against your competition whether you refer release, fingers, bow hunting equipment, compound or recurve, whatever.

The DCWC Archery Committee has improved the Archery area even more by building an archery shelter, which has picnic tables in and around the area.  There are new benches at each target as well as water stations placed strategically throughout the course, and there are bow hangers at each target.  There is always something that needs doing but it’s fun when we all get together and put our shoulders together.

We are proud of the way the archery is growing at DCWC and the way the course has grown

SO COME OUT AND JOIN THE FUN.
