 The Wake County Firearms
Education and Training Center

(Info courtesy of the Sir Walter Gun Club web site, Glenn Scales, Webmaster)

The Wake County Firearms Education and Training Center was constructed by the county, at a cost of $3.5 million, to promote firearms safety and to provide a safe place for Wake County citizens to exercise their right to keep and bear arms.

Location

The Center is located at 3921 Old Holly Springs - Apex Road, 2.5 miles south of the intersection of State Highway 55 and Holly Springs Road/New Hill Road, which is 4.3 miles east of US 1. From that intersection, proceed 1.1 miles south on New Hill Road, then bear right on Old Holly Springs - Apex Road for 1.4 miles. The building is on the right. A Map to the Center is available here for your convenience.

Hours

The Center is open to the public on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM; and on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 PM until 6:00 PM.  Hours of operation will expand as public demand requires.  Telephone number is 919-303-0851 during open hours only..

Layout

The public section of the indoor range has three bays. Bay 2 has nine positions for standing pistol shooting at distances from fifteen feet to fifty yards. Bay 3 has nine concrete benches for pistol or rifle shooting, seated or standing, at distances up to fifty yards. Bay 4 has eight concrete benches for pistol or rifle at fifty yards or one hundred yards. Bay 1 is reserved for law enforcement use.

Range Card Requirements

To obtain a range card, shooters must complete a two-hour firearms safety and range orientation session and pass an open-book written test with a score of at least 80%. Cost of a range card is $15 for Wake County residents and $25 for residents of other counties. This fee includes orientation session, range card and the first hour of range time. Thereafter, range time is $10 for Wake County residents and $15 for non - Wake County residents. Replacement range cards will cost $5.

Safety

All firearms brought into the building must be unloaded and contained in a case or box. Firearms may be removed from cases or boxes only at an assigned firing station, unless for inspection by a Range Safety Officer (RSO). Eyesight and hearing protection is required while shooting. Firearms safety rules and range procedures will be strictly enforced. Penalties for rules violations will range from RSO correction of minor errors to permanent expulsion from the Center. Unruly behavior will not tolerated and could result in the arrest of that person.

Sales and Rentals

Safety glasses, earplugs and earmuffs may be purchased or rented at the range, along with targets, spotting scopes, rifle and pistol rests, chronographs and bore sighting devices. A limited variety of the most popular ammunition is available for sale. Purchase prices for all items will be in line with prices charged by local gun shops.

Staff

All range personnel are National Rifle Association of America Certified Range Safety Officers. Staffing of the range is provided by Sir Walter Shooting Services, Inc. (SWSS), a North Carolina corporation based in Raleigh, North Carolina.
